The Courage to Become Visible After 50
For years, I believed that becoming a memoir teacher and coach was something other people did.
Someone with more credentials. Someone with a larger audience. Someone who had been doing it longer. I didn't realize that I was waiting for permission.
Many aspiring memoir writers are doing the same thing.
They tell themselves: "I'll start after retirement." "I'll write when I have more time." "I need to remember more." "I need to be a better writer." "I need to be more interesting."
But after writing my own memoir, Accidental First Lady, surviving cancer, and helping writers in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s tell their stories, I have learned something important:
Your story does not have an expiration date. In fact, the years that give us the most wisdom are often the years we hesitate to write about.
In this week's episode of the Making Memoir Magic podcast, I share the personal journey that taught me why becoming visible isn't about having thousands of followers or being famous.
It is about saying: This happened to me. This shaped me. This story deserves to be remembered. The first page of a memoir is not written by someone who feels completely ready. It is written by someone who chooses to begin anyway.

A final thought for anyone carrying a story they’ve always wanted to tell:
You don’t have to have a perfect outline, a dramatic life story, or years of writing experience to begin a memoir. You simply need curiosity about the moments that shaped you.
If you’re exploring your own story, I invite you to join my free Facebook group, Memoir Magic for Aspiring Authors, where I share memoir writing insights, prompts, and encouragement for writers at every stage of the journey.
Your life has chapters worth preserving. The only question is whether you’re ready to start turning the pages.
